If You Want To Make Money, Treat It Like A Business

Hi everyone! I just came back from a seminar on book publishing. Since my book, “CEO Secrets”, is already on the market, I didn’t hear too much breakthrough information. But one thing struck me as very odd. I could tell from the questions that were asked that, in a room full of writers who would like to make a profession out of writing, very few had studied the industry and the processes involved in getting a book out. The same thing holds true with musicians, artists, phortaphers and many  other creative people. They just want to create. The business side of their profession is the last thing that they want to think about. Some never get there at all. Of course, they are usually the ones who complain that it is “so rough” to get heard, seen or read.

I highly recommend to everyone who is in any creative field at all to either study the business side of your profession just as hard as you did your craft, or find someone who can hold your hand and take care of the business for you. Either way, you should join your industry’s professional organizations to find a mentor. If necessary, hire a coach, a manager or someone with expereince who can teach you how to avoid some of the most common pitfalls. Use experts such as attorneys or agents to handle contracts and negotiations. Treat your creativity like a business, and you will ultimately create wealth!
